You are here

Colorado weather is always fluctuating which makes it difficult to predict exactly what the temperatures will be.  Usually, the first rule of thumb is to plan on dressing in layers.  That way, if you are underdressed, a cozy sweater will warm you up.  If you are too hot, remove the sweater to cool down. Here is an outlook of Breckenridge's changing seasons.

WINTER/SPRING - Mid November through mid-May

An outdoor enthusiasts favorite, Breckenridge's winter and spring.  With over 375 inches of average snowfall, it is a place to bring the family for the perfect ski vacation.  Remember, snow is cold, and it sticks around all winter.  This means the average winter temperatures settle around the mid-30s.  As springtime nears, those temperatures increase, but sometimes just over freezing.  That would mean that in January, the temperature high could be 10 degrees! In April, a high of 45 degrees.  A temperature is considered freezing at 32 degrees Fahrenheit if this helps provide a little perspective.  The good news, winter sports like downhill skiing, Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and building snowmen, all keep your body moving.  Plus, the day sun in the winter doesn't disappoint with its natural warming effects, a perfect balance to any ski day.  Just make sure you dress in warm mid-layers, (wool is better than cotton) and ski pants, coats, gloves or mittens, and cozy wool socks too.  Don't forget the helmet to protect that noggin!

Because the winter and spring are colder months, the humidity will tend to be lower.  Be sure to drink plenty of water, sometimes twice to three times as much as you normally would.  The snow will be shiny, and the sun will reflect making it a bright winter ski day, so protect your eyes with sunglasses and/or ski goggles while you are outside.  Lastly, sunscreen will save any vacation.  Don't forget to wear at least 30 spf and you will be just fine.

SUMMER - Mid May through August

Enough with the cold, it's time to embark on the most colorful season in Breckenridge, summer.  Take in abundant sunshine and big, bright blue skies.  Add some lush greenery and vibrant wildflowers to the mix, now you have the most picturesque vacation yet.  Enjoy time spent outdoors with average daily temperatures in the high 70s.  Explore the Breckenridge mountains by hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and more without overheating from extreme summer highs.  Keep in mind, the more active you choose to be, the more water you need to drink!  Stay hydrated in the summer, the elevation is high and the sun is strong.

Plan to unwind in the cool 50-degree nights with a hot tub soak that feels perfectly adequate.  Don't worry about lack of sleep from hot air, just open a window and the cool breeze will surely delight.  So, bring your extra layers as Colorado nights welcome jackets and long pants.

Around mid-July, quick afternoon rains will shower the Breckenridge mountains which means your suitcase will need space for a raincoat.  The weather most days will be routine, sunny mornings, rainy afternoons, and beautiful sunsets to close out the day.  Don't be alarmed to wake up to a cloudy morning, it is mother nature's way of telling us the mountains need additional moisture.  With that raincoat in your suitcase, continue to explore Breckenridge no matter the elements.

FALL - September through mid-November

A transition from summer to winter, fall brings a sense of awe to Breckenridge Colorado.  Welcome the crisp cool autumn air which sits comfortably between 50 and 60 degrees during the day and 35 to 40 degrees at night.  Warm layers are your friend during this season as weather can fluctuate from warm sunshine to rainy umbrella days and even the first inkling of snow. Take advantage of fewer crowds as you play on the outdoor trails and watch as the Aspens take their time shifting from green to variations of red, orange and gold.  Take in the calm of Breckenridge's shortest season, then start preparing your ski gear...
